La Gazette 1633: Historical News Today

Esteemed Readers, latest tidings of the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648) have arrived. At the background of great negotiations the air of displeasure, fatigue & disagreement covers the Imperialistic armies. Too long wars are often so exhausting, while the desirable peace is so distant yet!

Luc Switzerland, 13th September, 1633: “The Cantons have firmed a resolution forbidding the Spaniards & the Imperialists to enter their lands & it is expected to create about fourteen thousand infantryman for this goal…”

Camp Espinal, 18th September, 1633: “The army from this town located at our border had difficulty to open the gates for Marshal de la Force; they managed to do that only after having seen our army ready to battle & our canons ready to shot. Nevertheless, they became displeased after we have entered there. The castle has not been explored yet, but for their delight we hope to go there today…”

Cologne, 26th September, 1633: “Our Ambassadors have returned from France to Bonne. The Imperialistic armies belonging to the Coronel Bonichusen & to the Coronel Einfidler got involved into a particular quarrel of their chefs regarding their staying at the front. Being on his way to lead the troops of the Coronel de la Mouluye to Bonichusen, the Lieutenant Coronel Grünsberg encountered a Swedish detachment that he defeated near Sigeberg. They say that the Coronel Hazfeld,- the one who succeded Holk, – is moving his troops towards Francofonie…”

Bruxelles, the last day of September, 1633: “On the 25th of the given month some magnificent fireworks were arranged here to celebrate the birth of the Prince of Hungary; this Court stops mourning for Don Carlos (of Spain), while the Infanta is giving a dinner in honour of the Monsieur (of France) & the Princess Marguerite (of France) in Treveure , which is considered to be one of the most marvellous houses…”

Vive le Roy! 🙂

  1. I was interested in this item: “Coronel Bonichusen & to the Coronel Einfidler got involved into a particular quarrel of their chefs regarding their staying at the front.” How are the Cornonels supposed to continue fighting if they have no chefs. An army does not march on an empty stomach. Thanks for the news, Maria.
