Esteemed Readers, Samhain/Toussaints was celebrated even during the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648), so let’s see what tidings there are for last days of October 1634.

Paris, the 29th of October, 1634: “Cardinal the Duke (Cardinal de Richelieu) is going to visit the King (Louis XIII) at Versailles where His Majesty is training his musketeers. After they are going to have a Council. The same day in the Archibishop’s palace sieur Cohon the Bishop de Nismes was sacred by the Archibishop of Arles & the Bishops de Albi & de Bazas at presence of Cardinal de Lyon, Coadjutor bishops de Tours and de Montauban  as well as many other people who were amused with excellent vocal & instrumental music. The day of Halloween/Toussaints he will celebrate the Mass of fidelity for the King guided by the Great Chaplaincy…”

the 31st of October, 1634: “The King departed from Versailles to St. Germain for hunting while Cardinal the Duke arrived from Ruel & stays in St. Germain now…”

the 1st November, 1634: “The King received communion from hands of Cardinal de Lyon, his Great Chaplaincy. His Majesty touched plenty of sick people…”

Frankfurt, the 29th of October, 1634: “The Duke Bernard de Weimar, who finally has calmed down his revolted troops with punishments & money, is moving all his army to the land of Wirtemberg. The Commander always stays in Mayence where the French Ambassador, sieur de Feuquiers, arrived some days ago…”

Heidelberg, the 29th October, 1634: “Having taken Sweifurt the King of Hungary returned to the Duchy of Wirtemberg where he distributed his army in garrisons. He occupied his area at Stuttgart. Gallas stays at Hailbrun, Picolonini is at Sweinfurt & the Duke de Lorraine is in the Marquisate de Dourlach. It is said that This Kings presses the garrison of Schorendoft & this fact makes displeased other Imperial troops…”
