Russian Ballets: La Bayadère

The ballet “La Bayadère” is another romantic ballet by Ludwig Minkus with choreography of Marius Petipa. It was presented by the Imperial Ballet in St. Petersburg on the 4th of February, 1887 & had an incredible success.

“La Bayadère” is a dramatic ballet with the Indian background. It tells an unhappy love story of a bayadère Nikiya & a sailor Solor who became victims of other people’s passions & selfishness. However their death was not in vain. Having suffered bitterness of the terrestrial love they reunite on heavens for eternal happiness.

“La Bayadère” is considered to be an example of the Russian classical ballets. There plenty of libretto versions & until now this ballet is a target of interest for modern choreographers.
