La Gazette 1634: Historical News Today

Esteemed Readers, here are some curious criminal events happened in April 1634 at the background of the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648). I should notice that the world has not become a safier place since that epoch:

Paris, the 9th April, 1634: “In the evening in the forest Sevard located six lieuës from here Sieur Iaquet Viscount de Tigeri was killed with two pistol shots by two masked horsemen who had injured shanks of his carriage horses…”

Montbelliard, the 12th April, 1634: “This week Marquis de Bourbonne, the Governor of this town, announced to have caught 60 gentlemen of the road & adventurers who stole cattle & did other robberies in some villages under the protection of France. He sent 15 Horsemen to identify them but the highwaymen made a fatal wound, with a pistol charged with 2 bullets, to the arm & to the breast of Sieur de Dampierre, Marquis de Bourbonne’s Esquire, one of these French Horsemen. His companions became so furious that they killed 14 men, wounded & aimed at the rest. To save their lives some of the highwaymen named a certain Swedish, Rhingrave Otho Loüis, the General of the troops of this region who stays in Alsace. That very period another French gentleman from the Hague, Sieur Tufani, was also killed by two masked riders in Baste…”

St. Germain, the 14th April, 1634:  “Sieur the Bishop of Nismes celebrated the Passion Mass with his usual eloquence. On the Easter Sunday after having attended the Mass & having received communion with his exceptional devotion the King, (NB:Louis XIV if be more precise),touched more than fifteen hundred sick men…”

Vive le Roy!🎉🎉🎉
