La Gazette 1634: Historical News Today

Esteemed Readers, our war (1618-1648) continues full of battles, defeats & victories, faded expectations & new hopes, capital punishments & confiscation of property. Europe needs peace badly but nobody knows when the Thirty Years’ War ends:

Casale, the 2nd March, 1634: “Regiments of Earls de Wartemberg & Ritberg the Imperialists are moving towards Medebach & Brielon in the diocese of Paderborn. Those of the Colonels de Osterholt, Paul Daube, Bonichusen & Iean de Bracht, (named Hermit as once he used to be one), wish to join them, meanwhile they are devastating the whole Westphalia. The troops of this very Hermit have ruined 30 villages of the Earl Wolrad de Waldek, they besieged the residence of this Earl & attacked little villages of Mingerichusen & Roden but were pushed back by inhabitants already experienced in war by need. Intercepted letters of Meternic, the Governor of Hildesheim, inform that he pleads for help for the Governor of Minden within 6 days explaining that the last one cannot stand anymore…”

De Weiden, the 8th March, 1634: “On the 5th of the given month the Colonels Kaph & Rose the Swedish have arrived near Egger to see a clamorous defeat of the Croatian regiment of the Colonel Corpus… It is confirmed that 200 persons have been killed, 150 have been imprisoned, all their equipment including 600 horse harnessing & 9 standards has been confiscated. At the same time nobody knows what has happened with the Colonel Corpus: his equerry & the horse are in the hands of the Swedish…”

De Bruxelles, the 18th March, 1634: ” On the 13th of the given month the Parliament of Malmes has condemned the Earl Henry de Bergues to be decapitated: all his property & belongings will be confiscated, his County Monfort together with a reward offered for his head will enter into the dominion of the King of Spain…”

Vive le Roy!🎉🎉🎉
