In 1869 Ludwig Minkus (1826-1917), a ballet composer of the Austrian origin invented a ballet-comedy “Don Quixote”. It was performed for the first time on the 14th of December 1869 & had an incredible success. To highlight the authentic Spanish spirit Marius Petipa added some traditional Spanish & Gipsy dances, interludes. They made the ballet vivid, dynamic & pleasant to watch.
For certain, the Soviet version has lost much of its original beauty but kept the spirit. I offer you, my Esteemed Readers, a short video from the version of 1959 with Maya Plesetskaya. The complete version performed in 1994 by the Bolshoi Theatre is not bad as well: Don Quixote.
