Esteemed Readers, our Soviet Movie Café will be dedicated to the War movies in 2021, especially to ones telling about the Second World War as it has been a great disaster for Russia. The modern international history prefers to erase the value of the URRS in this global conflict, so I hope that my intention to spread some light to the truth by means of the war movies will create a better comprehension of this war in the context of the Soviet reality at Stalin’s times.
The movie I have chosen today is a war drama “Only “Old Men Are Going to Battle” (1973). It is about a fighter squadron during the Battle of the Dnieper (1943). The film is shot black-and-white to make the atmosphere closer to the war time, while the plot unites a tragedy of the war with lyrisme of life. The 2nd Squadron of the Fighter Aircraft Guard Regiment the story tells about means both courageous pilots & poetic musicians who know to enjoy few peaceful moments between the battles.
The movie is good as a historical one as well, but this is not a plain chain of facts. It is a great personal drama of each character squeezed into the frames of an incredible cruelty named the Second World War.
Hurrah! Here is the version with the English subtitles. Enjoy it, Esteemed Readers!
