Tom Jobim: A Felicidade/Happiness

“A Felicidade/Happiness” is an eternal bossa hit of all the times & nations. Composed by our geniuses Vinicius de Moraes & Tom Jobim for the movie “Orfeu Negro/The Black Orpheus” (1958) it reflects all the shades of this emotion, its fragility & instability:

‘Sadness is never-ceasing, while happiness is…’ ‘Happiness is alike a feather flowing in the air with the wind. It flies so easily, but its life is short. The wind must blow on & on…’

The song was translated & performed in French by André Salvet “Adieu tristesse” & in Italian by Mario Panzeri “Felicità”. As a rule translations change the essential meaning, but in the case of music pearls by Tom & Vinicius we might discover that their masterpiece has obtained new traits. As happiness is so welcome in any language of the world.
