La Gazette in 2020: Historical News Today 1632

Esteemed Readers, the Thirty Years’ War was also marked by the Italian Plague outbreak lasted from 1629 to 1631. Themost suffered cities lost about 25% of its population were Milan & Venice. The disease also spread in Verona, Bologna, Florence. The circle of history repeats its course, doesn’t it? The interesting fact is that the plague was brought to the Italian peninsula by the German & the French troops. Louis XIII, the Father Joseph & Cardinal de Richelieu stayed in the camp together with ill soldiers & stayed alive. So, the efficiency of the present restrictions makes ponder much. Anyway, I proceed to the news.

Rome, 5th April, 1632: “Next Wednesday accompanied by a group of Cardinals the Pope is going to the Church Araceli to celebrate the Low Mass, to give indulgences & graces to people of the city who were saved from the contagion… With the same purpose in the afternoon of the Day of the Annunciation Senator Dominique, attired in a robe of golden brocade, departed from the Capitole & went to offer a silver lamp to glorious Apostles Saint Peter & Saint Paul. Then he also offered up his prayers in the name of the city in the Church Santa Maria Maggiore accompanied with trumpets of the Senate, all the Cardinals’ attendants & more than hundred Roman Noblemen. Each of them held a lit white wax candle & followed a charming procession of the Clergy”.

Vienne, 22th March, 1632:  “Moulding of new fashion arms doesn’t cease here. Besides, two hundred carriages were prepared to draw by land the boats produced here. They will be guided by Captain de Fridland to Znaim, where they will be used as bridges to cross rivers…He (Fridland) gave Tilly six thousand horses the last one demanded. As his people were badly equipped he sent them to take weapons in Turkish border towns. Other three thousand muskets taken by him in Comora were brought there. The help he expected from the Hungarians came to eight hundred Croats who are moving towards him. The rest ones didn’t wish to leave warding of their own country because of Ragotski’s fear. He is gathering a great army in Transylvania to throw it to Silesia…”

Vive le Roy! 🙂

  1. Good edition, Maria. Thank you. 😁

  2. It is interesting about the King, the Cardinel and the Father who didn’t get the plague. I am also not sure about this shut down and wonder if it is more of an environmental saving test than anything else.

Thanks, dear Robbie! So am I. I believe that God & Nature make us their last warning… True, in the past the King suffered various diseases together with his Court & Subjects. And it is logical. The immuno system must function. Keeping people locked makes things worse. Anyway, let’s hope that our release is near. :-9 Best wishes from Moscow!

  3. How long did it take their virus to stop ✋ do you know?

Dear Charlotte, the plague outbreaks lasted from 1629 to 1631. The most serious ones took place in 1630. People passed this suffering in the natural way, praying much & taking the measures they knew. Imagine, how strong their immune system was!
