Another famous fruit of the creative duet Tom Jobim-Vinicius de Moraes is, undoubtedly, a melodic praise of joy & longing named “Chega de Saudade”. This masterpiece has taken time to be born, though:
Tom Jobim was staying at his parents’ in Poco Fundo, when one day he heard his mother’s cleaning lady singing a pretty tuny while cleaning the floor. He was captured with it, grasped the guitar & made its first arrangement. Having returned to Rio de Janeiro, he asked Vinicius de Moraes to make the proper verses for the music. (In one of the interviews Vinicius de Moraes confessed that the piece belonged to both of them. “I cannot say now which part belongs to Tom & which to me. We worked together. He added here, I added there,” something similar he declared.)
The whole year passed since the song had been born & after the meeting with João Gilberto, it was included in the album of Elizete Cardoso “Cancão do amor demais”. This masterpiece was recorded in 1957 & since then this eternal melody has been spreading joy into the world.
