Scented Magic of a Moment

All what we get is a moment, that’s a fragile instant between after & before. It’s mysterious, almost impossible to catch personification of Present. All our life is threading of moments. They are our pearls & sooner or later enter into the chain of our personal time. We appreciate these gems of existence, doing all our best to resurrect them by all means. However becoming our past, the moments-pearl undergo changes. That’s the mystery of our live: we experience a moment that may last only for some minutes and when we recall it in our memory, it’s always a story with its logical beginning & end, full of extraordinary details.

There are various hints to resurrect a moment: a vision, a sound, a word, a colour, a taste, but only the one is strongest & most bewitched: scent it is. The nature of fragrance is enigmatic itself. The world is full of aromas & whenever we re-experience them we bring back various events of our life in most brightest way. Fragrance has an enormous power upon living creatures. And since perfumery has been invented each of us is an alchemist of Present. It’s just enough to open a bottle & apply a drop or spray some charming liquid and voilà the machine of time has moved us to our past….or even to our future if the fragrance is prepared for an instance to come.

All regarding scents is extraordinary: a moment of purchasing, a moment of opening, a moment of applying and undoubtedly the part they play in an event they’re prepared for. I believe there are special fragrances, almost of Divine nature both by their formula & duration as well as there are ordinary ones, light & weak but still able to add a touch of elegance in our daily routine. In any case a fragrance is a travel though Time. In any case it is a real history created by ourselves.

  1. For Christmas, my granddaughter Ceilia (age 19) totally surprised me with the gift of Channel No.5–a gift that brought back memories of my 20s and 30s when my husband I I were young. Oh, how sweet of my darling Ceilia (who knew about my Channel history/ even though I’ve been wearing Knowing for decades. Sweet, sweet memories! ❤

Ah…The sense of smell. a memory that it lingers longer than any other memory, we are programmed by genetics that way, sometimes perfumes, fragrances, and other odors can appear in dreams, once on a dream I was named after an Indigenous word that we didn’t had at the time in our language, and that now it goes by the the name of Petrichor.
    Great post Maria. :-).

!!!!! Thank you for your wonderful poetic comment! I wonder if you had the perfume in mind when you wrote it. I guess ‘Casmir’ or ‘Fidji’ would fit to this description. Strong, oriental mixtures with an enigmatic veil! 🙂

    So beautifully penned!… And true 😉 …
Have you read or heard of Marcel Proust´s ” “Remembrance of Things Past” (“Swann´s Way”), and, especifically, the episode of the madeleine. In brief: In his novel, he describes an incident where he was eating a madeleine (i.e sort of french muffin), and a childhood memory of eating tea soaked cake with his aunt was “revealed” to him. From this memory, he then proceeded to be reminded of the childhood home he was in, and even the town itself.
Your post made me think of this great book!… Senidng love & best wishes. Have a wonderful week ahead 😀

      Dear Aquileana,
yes I do know both Proust & his story with madeleine. And I’m glad that my Readers make this association. 🙂 Scents is an enormous power! 🙂
      Best wishes,

Qualsiasi profumo, naturale o costruito, porta con se un ricordo, può imprimere il presente, può dare la scintilla al futuro.
    Buona serata.

  6. Maria, this is such a lovely discussion. Scent is, indeed, a powerful influence in our lives. Because I developed significant myopia at an early age and didn’t realize it at the time, I think my physical being compensated with acute hearing and an enhanced sense of smell. Sometimes they are gifts, and others not so much. 🙂 But there are scents that bring wonderful, peaceful memories – the scent of the earth after the rain, and the subtle scent of snow. There’s another scent that always brings a sense of presence and clarity – sweetgrass ( Thank you for reminding me of these gifts. ❤

Dear Carol, thank you for your wonderful considerations & a beautiful poem. Sweat grass is alike the scent of our Mother Earth. Very reviving, I’d say & strong! 🙂 By the way, parrots & budgies had a very good sense of smell. I noticed them to smell food before eating it. As well Gregory used to like some perfumes I wore. Something attracted him. 🙂 Greetings to Queennie!
